Help us make Britain a great place to grow old™
WRVS is a national charity that thinks every older person in Britain has the right to
live the life they want.
Some older people do, but many still don’t have access to the choices and opportunities
that most of us take for granted. They have to settle for less as they get older. That's
got to stop.
There's an opportunity right now to make Britain a much better place to grow old. We
want to work with you to make it happen.
Together, there are four key things we need to do:
Growing old in 2009
Recent research carried out by WRVS asked 1,000 people over 65 their opinions on life in
Britain today. There are signs that things are improving but there's more work to do.
- A fifth of older people say their quality of life has declined since turning 65 and
over half fear their quality of life will decline as they get older.
- Over a third of older people don't feel they're listened to.
- One in ten older people have difficulties in getting out and about due to a lack of
confidence.
- The things older people feel are most important to their quality of life include;
options for transport to get out and about (44 per cent), opportunities to meet people
(33 per cent) and their ability to participate in social activities (25 per cent).
